MATSUYAMA, Japan - Picture shows a concept for a monument commemorating Japanese adventurer Hyoichi Kono, only the third person in the world to walk solo to the North Pole. The monument will soon be completed and unveiled May 1 in Resolute, Canada, a Matsuyama-based group said April 8. In May 2001, Kono was found dead in the Arctic Ocean.

Memorial for late Japanese adventurer unveiled in Canada

RESOLUTE, Canada - A monument dedicated to Japanese adventurer Hyoichi Kono, whose body was found in the Arctic Ocean in May 2001, is unveiled in the Canadian hamlet of Resolute on May 1. Its inscription reads: ''This commemorative monument represents the hope of those who loved and supported Hyoichi Kono that his adventurous spirit will be remembered.'' Kono died during an attempt to travel by foot and kayak from the North Pole to his home in Ehime Prefecture. The photo was provided by a committee formed by Kono's supporters.
